What you'll be doing Summer is busy for us at Riverford and we are recruiting for a Seasonal Farm Supervisor to lead a team of pickers in the manual harvest of spinach and other vegetables. You will be working in variable conditions, and may have inexperienced members in your team. You will lead by example motivating and coaching your team to achieve your daily target output; communicating with your manager as you go, reporting any issues or concerns. We are a mixed farm and you will also be required to lead the same team in planting, harvest and hoeing of other crops, such as spring onions or broad beans. You will need to be well organised, be great at prioritising and planning ahead, reliable and hard working, and be confident communicating with both management and your team. You will need to have previous experience of leading a team in an agricultural setting and ideally experience of the manual harvesting of vegetables. It is essential that you have a full driving license for this position. You will usually work five days per week Sunday - Wednesday and Friday, with Saturday and Thursday as your regular day off. Sometimes you might be required to work overtime in the evening in order to complete a job, particularly when planting This is a fixed term contract starting from around May and finishing between September and December, 39 hours a week. Hours of work are usually 5.45am - 2pm Sunday to Wednesday and 5.45am - 1.00pm on Friday. Based out of Wash Barn, Buckfastleigh, TQ11 0JU. Responsibilities - Perform regular team meetings to brief your team on the days work ahead - Relay the importance of quality to your team, demonstrating the standards you expect to see, coaching individual members of your team where appropriate. - Ensure that the target output rates are achieved whilst maintaining the agreed quality standards - Put on or take off crop covers as necessary - Hoeing or hand weeding - Machine planting or hand planting; - Occasional post harvest preparation or packing - Make sure correct health and safety procedures are being adhered to at all times. - Proactively manage the output of your work, letting your supervisor know if you are under resourced or unlikely to finish beyond the expected time for any reason. - Manage the decision of when to stop for breaks etc. Work towards an agreed time but it may be appropriate to finish slightly earlier or later. - To remain competitive, it is important we are responsive and react quickly. Things will constantly change and it is essential that you are flexible and understand that the above list is a guideline and that you will be expected to expand on this list, use your initiative, challenge the status quo and come up with ideas on how things can be done better or more effectively. Skills & experience - Experience in working outdoors performing a manual harvest of vegetables, ideally at supervisory level. - Tractor driving is desirable but not essential. - Speaking or understanding one or more east European languages would be helpful. - Able to speak and comprehend enough English to understand our health and safety policies and procedures and the days work requirements - Previous manual handling training would be useful - Driving license is essential for this role Personal qualities - Natural leadership and coaching qualities - Able to energise and motivate others - Hard working and reliable - Enjoys working as part of a team Salary £9.62 per hour Benefits Riverford is a beautiful place to work, with lots of great people - and other benefits too.
