Purpose of the job

  1. Help achieve the Idea Store (*) objectives through the provision of a high quality customer support and information services by working as part of a team.
  2. Work to increase client awareness and take-up of services targeting non-users and outreach priority client groups.

(*)Please note: any reference to Idea Store throughout to be applied to both Idea Store and libraries

Main duties and responsibilities

1.To serve customers from the frontline.

2.To support Idea Store objectives via the provision of a high quality service to Idea Store customers, including implementation of the Library Bye Laws and Regulations in association with security staff.

3.To be part of a team of Idea Store Co-ordinators working on delivering high quality services to Idea Store customers.

4.To participate in the provision of information and assistance to Idea Store customers.

5.To create and cultivate an ethos where diversity is valued and incorporated into the delivery of all services.

To welcome and greet Idea Store users, taking a positive role in promoting Idea Store services and stock, making customers feel welcome and at ease, and ensuring high customer service standards are met.

To floorwalk, i.e. being available to customers on the floor, and continuously ensuring that the stock is tidy.

To assist in the recruitment and selection of staff.

To be responsible for areas of stock: promoting materials, assisting in withdrawing of stock and filling gaps as necessary according to agreed guidelines.

To provide customer support for learning and library activities in Idea Stores by following the agreed guidance and procedure notes, and assisting customers in the use of appropriate learning materials, equipment and facilities in accordance with agreed guidance and procedures.

To assist customers in using the self-issuing/discharge system.

To register new members, ensuring all relevant data is collected.

To carry out shelving, removal of books, repairs of damaged stock, recommendations for restocking, promotion, etc. for one or several sections of the Idea Store.

To assist the Idea Store Manager or Team Leader in maintaining the site in a clean, tidy and fit for purpose state and to carry out tasks related to housekeeping, premises tidying and cleaning as necessary.

To participate in children activities such as arts and crafts, storytelling

To operate the till.

To assist in decisions, such as closing a site, or banning a user, as necessary.

To participate in the implementation of equality and diversity policy and practices in delivering Idea Stores services.

To take part in meetings with staff and partner organisations.

To participate in all aspects of the Council's performance management scheme, ensuring that performance standards and targets are set and met within agreed timescales.

To be part of a team of Idea Store Co-ordinators, working with colleagues on the day-to-day running of an Idea Store.

To operate the till as necessary.

To assist in the monitoring, evaluation of service delivery and collection of quality data to ensure that targets and standards are being achieved.

To actively promote and comply with the Council's Equal Opportunities Policy in the opposition and eradication of all forms of discrimination and to ensure all services are accessible to all users.

To fulfil all duties and responsibilities with proper regard to the council's Health and Safety Policy and any other relevant legislation in order to ensure a safe working environment for the public, the post-holder and other members of staff.

To undertake any other duties and responsibilities which may arise from time to time, and which are commensurate with the grade of the post and within the capabilities of the post holder.

1.KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge and understanding of purpose of modern public library and/or adult learning provision.

Knowledge of all aspects of running a busy service point.

2.EXPERIENCE

Experience of using IT systems.

Experience of multi-tasking.

ENGAGING WITH OTHERS

Ability to engage with all customers, including children, in the context of Idea Stores.

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to induct new staff.

ACHIEVING RESULTS

Ability to provide a high quality service to Idea Store customers.

Ability to promote all Idea Store services and stock.

Proven and demonstrable interest in books.

Ability to work creatively and constructively with others and to work alone without close supervision.

Good organisational and time management skills and ability to perform tasks requiring close attention to detail.

Ability to lead on project work.
