About us

The NHS Digital is a ground-breaking data, information and technology resource for the health and care system and plays a fundamental role in driving better care, better services and better outcomes for patients. It is the trusted source of authoritative data and information relating to health and care. It supports the delivery of IT infrastructure, information systems and standards to ensure information flows efficiently and securely across the health and social care system to improve patient outcomes.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Database Administrator with experience of either PostgreSQL or Oracle databases in an enterprise environment.

The role

We are looking for the right candidate to be part of our Database Administrator team working within the Delivery & Assurance team of the Hosting and Infrastructure team, to design, implement, support and maintain PostgreSQL or Oracle databases in an enterprise environment.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of either PostgreSQL or Oracle Database Administration in an enterprise environment.
  • Strong Linux / Unix skills with shell scripting an advantage.
  • An understanding of the current technical challenges in delivering national IT projects and programmes within the Health and Social Care environment.

You will be working with other database administrators, and a variety of other teams to achieve your goals. You will be expected to be proactive and work on your own initiative. You will be working closely with the technical managers and project managers within the Hosting and Infrastructure team to deliver enterprise capable PostgreSQL or Oracle database solutions.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate, or be capable of developing; excellent leadership and problem solving skills, negotiation and facilitation skills and be able to support NHS Digital in achieving its goals.

Applicants should note that as part of this role they may be required to work some unsociable hours. This could involve ad-hoc out of hours work to undertake system maintenance type activities and on call arrangements to respond to service issues. It could also include working as part of a rota covering 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week. Allowances will be paid if this is required as outlined in agenda for change terms.

About you

You will be expected to have a successful track record of working in a complex environment, with the ability to work autonomously. You will be responsible for working with other teams to ensure that the Hosting and Infrastructure team contributes to NHS Digital continual ability to provide services underpinned by PostgreSQL or Oracle databases.

About the rewards

In addition to a competitive salary you can look forward to an excellent contributory pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement and various flexible working options. Perhaps the most compelling reasons for joining us, however, are the scale, scope and high profile nature of the projects you'll be working on, and the unprecedented opportunity for personal and professional development.
