On behalf of a fast growing and industry leading software provider, with offices in Exeter, I am looking to recruit a passionate management professional with a development background, to manage and assist planned growth in an exciting time for the organisation. Your background will preferably involve proven management and growth of a development team, ideally within OOP environments (PHP/Java). A key element of success in your application will be the demonstrated ability to manage and grow a development team, which is likely to double in size over the next 12 months. As Head of Software Development, you will lead a team of software developers (comprising a combination of frontend developers and backend developers, and also systems administrators), providing structure and man management to ensure productivity. Your key focus will be overseeing technologies used, team capabilities and successful growth in the team. You will push forward innovation and product/platform development, with a focus on several business-critical high profile projects, with a view to helping improve standards and efficiency. Your role, reporting to the managing director, will carry the responsibility for delivery and management of the company's software and apps development resource. Ultimately, you will be accountable for the successful delivery of project and client work, the development of products and services, and the architecture to support these services. With proven management experience, you will overcome and solve technical challenges, working closely with decision makers across the business. Your key delivery will be identifying, recommending, developing and implementing cost-effective solutions for all aspects of the business. Duties to include: - Ensuring smooth running of department at all times. - Maintain an oversight of all software development projects and activity, ensuring that compatibility and integration issues are considered and be responsible for the monitoring and control of all IT-led software projects within the company. - Manage department staffing, including resource planning, recruitment, professional development, appraisal and disciplinary actions to provide a resilient and responsive support team that provides the specified service levels to the organisation's users and the required skills for the technical support of the solutions in use. - Be accountable for the availability of client-facing platforms, ensuring adherence with SLAs and promoting fault-tolerant software architecture. - Determine the most appropriate design of infrastructure to support products, considering prevailing best practices and technologies. - Training and teaching of programming standards to the team. - Compliance testing - client systems v company standards. - Risk analysis of business concern according to ISO 27001 framework. - Develop, promote and sustain positive and productive external working relationships and partnerships, including joint working with external hardware and software service suppliers, and client management of relevant contracts to ensure that the company obtains best value in the resourcing of its ICT requirements. - Direct research on potential technology solutions and implementations in support of new initiatives, opportunities and procurement efforts. - Keep current with technology and determine what new technology solutions and implementations will meet business and system requirements. - Architecture and design of platform delivery. - Establishing and maintaining regular written and in-person communications with the organisation's department heads. - Provide technical consultation to other departments and company. - Complete technical scope and audit of existing client solutions and suggest new ones. - Product demonstrations, training and support of other departments within the organisation. - Occasional off site travel and client visits. - To recognise the importance and benefits of effective team work, assisting colleagues and providing cover as and when required. This also includes respecting and motivating your colleagues in other departments who are responsible for servicing and supporting your activity, plus maintaining effective communication links with other teams and departments. - The activities listed above are not exhaustive and the job holder may be asked to undertake other related activities from time to time including special projects and tasks that contribute to the effectiveness of the company as a whole. Essential Skills - Proven experience in software development and project management. - Software design methodologies such as RAD, LD, AGILE, SCRUM, WATERFALL. - Strong leadership and managerial skills - with proven ability to grow teams, and manage change. - Ability to effectively prioritise and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. - Experience with systems design and development from business requirements analysis through to day to day management. - Technical knowledge of PC operating systems, Linux, MYSQL / MSSQL / MARIA DB, PHP, Apache/NGINX, CSS/SCSS, JAVA, JavaScript, Angular, XML, HTML. - In depth knowledge of applicable laws and regulations as they relate to IT and software development. - Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities. - Understanding of the organisations technical goals and objectives. - Ability to present ideas in a business friendly and user friendly language. - Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. - Extensive experience working in a team-orientated, collaborative environment. - Understanding of human resource management principles. - Excellent understanding of security and secure design principles. Desired security qualifications (CSTP, CSTA, CAST, CRT). - Knowledge of OWASP and the top 10 vulnerabilities against web architecture. - OOP, design patterns & UML. - Cloud technology and understanding of related technologies. - Database technology (relational and non-relational NOSQL), clustering, partitioning, sharding, replication, encryption). Desirable skills/experience - Understanding of Flex legacy applications would be advantageous. - MVC frameworks (CI/Laravel etc). - Understanding and experience of implanting services on the Microsoft Azure stack. - Mobile technology and development preferred -xcode / cordova / phonegap. - Creative Cloud /PS/AI/PSD/FLA/FD You will be joining at a time of exciting growth within the business, and accompanying financial investment in your business area.
